The Gingerbread House

Villa Castel Fleuri, Hait Ocean TraderMany of the old colonial houses of Haiti, otherwise known as Gingerbread Houses, have fallen on hard times.  Many were already in gradual decline before the 2010 earthquake struck Port-au-Prince.  The children whisper softly saying these houses “have spirits”.  Life must have been grand for the original owners and their immediate heirs and successors.  One could almost imagine the lord of the house (dressed in his white shirt and pants) up on the balcony fanning him self, drinking a cool lemonade while watching his slaves and servants toil away on the grounds of the estate.  This particular brick and stone mason house in the photo is known as Villa Castel Fleuri.  It is located on Avenue Christophe in Port-au-Prince.  It is rumored to have been the home of the President of Haiti for a brief period.  I am guessing that would have been Papa Doc himself.  I guess PD had the last laugh.  ©  Photo By
